As I began preparing for this weekends worship services, I came across a song with Michael Guglielmucci’s name attached on the worship lyrics website I use. So I thought I would Google Michael’s name and see if there were any updates. Sadly, I couldn’t find any.

Anyways, reading your blog and the response of your readers, God spoke to me and I thought I would share for a moment.

I think it has been alluded to in many of the statements made by others, but let me say as plainly as I can….

…. The difference between Michael’s sin and our sin is that Michael’s sin has been exposed and ours hasn’t. And being in the world’s spotlight did not help any.

In Jesus’ day, the religious pundits and leaders alike were no different than they are today, really. They relished in the discovery of others’ sin and broadcast them loud and clear, stirring the sentiment of the crowds to mete out quick, and often, deadly justice as they continued to hold to the traditional old testament punishments for sin including stoning in some cases.

Jesus was presented with such a case when some men brought to Him a woman they had caught in the very act of adultery. They threw her down at His feet and smugly quoted old testament law which stated her sin was punishable by stoning.

This woman’s sin was exposed for all to see and I can imagine the crowd was quickly growing as they shouted, “Stone her. Stone her. She should die.” But Jesus had compassion on the this woman (just as He has compassion on you and me). He could have picked up a stone and with all righteousness commence to carrying out the appropriate punishment.

But Jesus’ response was simple and surprised everyone. In one Gospel account, rather than picking up a stone, He reached out and picked up a stick, bent down to the ground and quickly began writing in the sand.

As He wrote, the men who had accused this woman of gross moral failure, walked away from them one by one. At one point, Jesus stopped, looked at the sobbing woman and asked, “Where are you accusers? Neither do I condemn thee. Go and sin no more”.

Perhaps you are wondering, “What did Jesus write?” We don’t rightly know, but I personally believe Jesus began exposing the sins of the woman’s accusers. I believe they became fearful for their own lives and the lives of the families. I believe they became very, very nervous and could not counter what was being written and ran away humiliated, angry and ashamed.

Yet there is something very peculiar here and it is important to catch this. You see, Jesus wrote in the sand – not on parchment with ink or in stone with a chisel, but in the sand. Even though these men came to Jesus with evil thoughts in their hearts, Jesus chose to expose their sin in the sand. I don’t know about you but my experience has been that if you write something in the sand and then proceed to walk through it or drag a broom/rake across it the record is permanently destroyed. Jesus demonstrated that even the sins of these men could be permanently wiped away, if they truly wanted forgiveness.

And that’s what Jesus has done – expunged the record of Michael Guglielmucci’s sin, forgiven his gross misconduct and never remember it again. How much more should we forgive and forgive and forget his sin.

I pray for Michael when I come across his name, or sing one of the awesome songs that he has penned. My prayer is he will find acceptance and forgiveness from others, find restoration in the ministry and be able to use the gifts God has given to him in the future and bring us even more awesome songs of worship that will bring us to our knees in worship of our Savior, renew our hope of redemption, and encourage us to trust God for our healing.
